The poetry of the movement – intensive workshop

Contact Improvisation, Authentic Movement,  and Bodywork

Anjelika Donij (RU) & Leonardo Lambruschini (IT)

14 – 18 June 2017 – Casina Settarte – www.casinasettarte.org – Ostuni – Italy

untitled-9296

Five intensive days in the beautiful context of Casina Settarte immersed in nature among olive, fig, and almond trees, with beaches nearby.  We will investigate on the body motion in the natural enviorenment and in the space surrounding it, alternating between indoor and outdoor activities.

We will be experiencing moving and dancing following inner impulses, finding pathways inside the body and relating to others with an inner guideline. In Moving there is no right or wrong, just the sensation of connecting to our bodies, sensing and sharing the weight with somebody else, finding new ways of moving and expressing.

Contact improvisation offers a playful, self-defined way of connecting to other dancers. It becomes a joyful game of give and take. Authentic Movement is a beautiful tool to connect to an inner moving impulse. It is a possibility to express feelings, images and information from the subconscious that come through our bodies. Bodywork teaches us about inner alignment and touch qualities, it is also a wonderful way to let our nervous system integrate our experiences. We make room to process this in sharing. The dance is our teacher.
Through this two very complimentary practice we will explore:
eyes open, eyes closed
responsiveness to our partners and surroundings,
change of states
faculty of vision – part of the dance

Giocare, rotolarsi, arrampicarsi…

Intensive Thomas Kampe

Wide Open Dancing: The Feldenkrais Method and Contact Improvisation

In this workshop we will draw on gentle and playful learning processes based on The Feldenkrais Method® to support our shared dance practice. We will focus on developing an increased and fluid coordination of our core, and on fine-tuning our ability to relate creatively to our living environment. This workshop will also explore the creative use of vision and seeing, and some basic upside down skills – handstands and assisted back-flips – to increase the three–dimensional range of our CI-dancing. The Feldenkrais Method makes use of two approaches, ‘Awareness through Movement®’(ATM) and ‘Functional Integration®’(FI) to facilitate conditions from which ‘awareness’ and possibilities for new ways of moving can be cultivated. This is achieved through non-corrective, pleasurable and structured inquiries in empathic, improvisational dialogues.

Thomas Kampe
Thomas Kampe (UK/GER) lives in London and has worked with dance, theatre and movement for the last 30 years. He has worked as performer, choreographer and director in Germany and Britain, and works as Senior Lecturer for Movement for Actors at Bath Spa University, UK. Thomas has taught somatic approaches towards Movement Education, Theatre and Contact Improvisation in different settings around the world. Thomas is a qualified teacher of the Feldenkrais Method® which forms a foundation for his teaching of dance and movement. He holds a Phd – ‘The Art of Making Choices: The Feldenkrais Method as a Choreographic Resource‘ and regularly writes about Somatics and critical culture. www.thomaskampe.com .

Leonardo Lambruschini è danzatore, attore e performer.
“STOP by STOP”

Composition in Contact Improvisation

A workshop about dance and the things in it that are visible and invisible.

Vision is our way of seeing things. We will experiment with vision and stretch our ability to see from safety to aesthetic pleasure.

We will also look at what happens if vision is not our only way of looking and seeing. We will learn to trust this knowledge with our eyes open and closed.

We will practice CI and its relationship with the composition of space, time and place.

We will work with time and understand movement principles.

We will discipline the capacity to stay focused in the chaos and spontaneous in the clear boundaries of the form.

I am interested in seeing dance from the point of view of time, quantity, space, dimensions, pressure, gravity, temperature.

Like baking a cake.

Or calculating the weather.

Or telling fortune in the coffee grounds.

We’ll research the questions:

What is visible, predictable, teachable?

What is hidden, unpredictable and unteachable?

Can we see a jam as an art work in progress?

How does a witness influence a dancer? And how does a dancer influence a witness?

We will always start with ourselves and return to ourselves through dance, awareness, attention, silence.

CI is a perfect way to research different questions about dance, creativity, living through whatever is there. We invite you to walk the ladder from “real” to “magical” and back =) Our rivers will climb mountains. Life will surely become clearer!

Angelika Donij
I studied to be a choreographer, but now I practice the art of de-educating the body. My special interest in contact improvisation is clarity and in studying nature and it´s laws, I dance investigate and live in accordance with what I find. Practicing honesty in the way I move weight in the space of gravity, and keeping the attention focused, I´m ever surprised at how the dance clears itself from the personal when I let the things happen as they do. In this way I see that the practice of Contact Improvisation helps transformation and the possibility to leave the limits of personality .
Leonardo Lambruschini
Actor, dancer and performer. My journey in the performing arts started with the theatre, dance came afterwards. But then, when I encountered the Contact Improvisation, it was magic at ‘first sight’. Acting, playing and dancing were finally melting together as a whole. I dance as a student, as a teacher and as a performer with an unquenchable “thirst” for exploration and… for the ‘wonder’ on what happens in that ‘middle-land’ that is created in the process of receiving and returning, of uttering and listening to. I love the creative process that leads people to formulate plans and actions that promote the movement as a form of artistic and personal evolution and social expression.

Alexandra Soshnicova and Serghei Golovnea

Cooperation between Alexandra and Sergey started in 1997, in a modern dance group “Voices”, under the direction of Angela Doniy. They became a duet 2000. Since then they dance, improvise, teach, make choreography together. They take part in international projects and performances (as dancers and as choreographers) and travel.
Together they organize international projects and festivals in Moldova. They organized 7 international festivals: “Impulse to grow” in 2000, “Traditions and modernity” in 2001, “Phenomenon of relations” and “Gender and cultural Identity in dance” in April and September 2003, 5th international festival “Interaction” in 2006, “Children and adults, points of intersection” in 2009, “Contact and not only”, 2011, “Focusing on the Dance” 2012, “Tango&CI”, 2013, MoldovaDanceFest /CI&Performance,2015
Teaching geography: Moldova, Ukraine, Belorussia, Bulgaria, Israel, Estonia, Russia, Latvia, N.Irelland, France, Georgia, Greece. They are also the leaders of contemporary and folk dance school “Fantezia” in Chisinau, choreographers and dancers of contemporary dance and performance group “Voices”.
Musicians:
Stan Potoky – musician, psychologist and traveler – Looking into your own eyes is very important to stay alive… To follow the flow of your truth. To feel the authenticity of your intentions. To follow your inner song. To dance yourself without unnecessary thoughts and desire to please others. When it’s warm outside I like to take a backpack, musical instruments and to go for a trip. It could be a hiking in the mountains or a hitchhiking to another country. Carefully observing the circumstances that life offers I love to play and invite others to play with me. In my life happened: theatrical activity, psychological education, spontaneous dancing, hiking, traveling, street music, states of altered consciousness … experiences which invite you to look deeper into yourself. Looking into my truth I saw a house of songs. The source of inspiration and strength. I invite you to look into yourself and find a vivid music of your Soul. Stanislav Barysh (Stan Potoku) Stanislav Barysh musician from Ukraine lives last 2 years in Moldova and participate in ADDM (Association for Modern Dance Development in Moldova) activity as performer in co – production with Dance Modern group “Voices” and as organizer of local Art events for kids and adults. He teach JEWS HARP with his personal method: he combine technic skills with spontaneous voice’s and rhythm’s games, play with images, base and improvisation structures . He develops his author method “Intuitive singing”, experiments in combination “voice and movement” material. Stanislav plays different music instruments and dances contact improvisation. He is a teacher and psychologist in Art Studio “Happy Kids”. He plays: jews harp, okarina, guitar, ukulele, udu, tylynnka, Djembe, forte piano, jabara, body percussion, vocal. His educational -Professional Qualification: Pedagogy & Psychology He is one from coordinator of the Dance Moldova Festival, presenter Art production, creative cooperation, teaching exchange in frame of the International Festivals in Moldova, Ukraine, Russia, Romania, Georgia.

Contact Improvisation workshop “INTERVALS” with Asaf Barach & Linda Bufali

“INTERVALS”

Intensive workshop & Jam with Asaf Barach & Linda Bufali

10-11-12 March 2017 | Spazio Seme ( Arezzo – Tuscany)

15327616_739676582847410_1110386667_n

INTERVALS

Etymologically, the word interval comes from inter-val, the space/relationship between two walls… In many languages such as Italian, French or English, the words that names ‘concrete objects’ are basic nouns while the words that name relationship between objects are derived nouns. For exemple, we say a street or a road (‘concrete objects’) while we say intersection (from the verb inter-sect), and so interval is a relation defined by the walls that create it
In this workshop we will attempt to construct a (danced) language that functions with the opposite logic, a language where the relations, the in-betweens are the basic building blocks and where ‘concrete objects’ are entities that emerge from this in-betweeness, the walls (vals) are the end-points of the ‘inter-space’, roads are projected from the intersections…. a relation-scape instead of an object-scape. The interval as a differentiation that individuates (after Levinas).
And this brings us to MA… In Japanese, ma, the word for space, suggests interval. It is best described as a consciousness of place, not in the sense of an enclosed three-dimensional entity, but rather the simultaneous awareness of form and non-form. Ma is not something that is created by compositional elements; it is the thing that takes place in the imagination of the human who experiences these elements. Therefore, ma can be defined as experiential place understood with emphasis on interval.
In a CI dance before the touch, the impact, the weight but even before the intention-to, there is a magic moment, an interval, a place Viktor Frankl writes about as the place between stimulus and response where we can look for our freedom and our power to chose the mode of reaction.
Does all this sound very philosophical? indeed. it is, but this is what CI is for us, a way to DO philosophy with our bodies in interaction. We will roll and fall and stomp and slide and crawl and push and shove…. we will DANCE!!!

ASAF BARACH

15328166_739676682847400_2107186097_n

I have been practicing teaching and performing contact improvisation over 20 years in Israel, Europe and the United States. Among my most important teachers are Kirstie Simson, Lisa Nelson, Daniel Lepkof, Min Tanaka and Steve Paxton. These days I think of CI as collective somatic practice and my dancing and teaching are highly influenced by my study of the Rolfing technique with Hubert Godard. I live in Paris where I teach and perform with the me-lieu collective. I also practice cognitive neuroscience where my main foci are the cognitive/physiological underpinning of dance and improvisation (labodanse.org) and language.

LINDA BUFALI

15310315_739677072847361_1278735869_n-1

While I was trying to study acting, in 1998, l bumped into…and against this “weird dance”.
After few years I realized I was still there, sweating, falling, laughing and feeling. So I decided to go deeper into it, entering the phantasmagorical world of workshops and festivals, bumping into and against strange teachers who helped me sweating, falling , laughing and feeling even better.
I’d give anything to forget all that so to start again, off for the journey again! But it’s not possible!Since 2008, I have been teaching in Italy (intensive workshops in many communities and Italy Contact Festival ’15), abroad (intensive workshop in Madrid, Lleida, Alcoi, Colon, Basque Country, Amsterdam, Israeli Contact Festival ’14, Dancefullnes Ukraine ’16) and I have been organising events to help Contact Improvisation spread as much as possible (I am an organizer of the Italy CI Camp). It’s a bit as make the journey from the start, knowing the path but taking a different luggage with you; and always hoping to bump into/against something interesting. I see contact dance as the best way I have in this lifetime to meet someone outside the social contract and to keep my drive for movement alive.Life is movement, moving in pairs accelerates awareness. I deeply believe that contact improvisation is potentially, a big, healthy revolution.

We are creating a space where participants will be able to express themselves in different forms. It is truly possible to open the door for subconscious mind to come on stage and to be understood. The best way to do it is in such safe and comfortable conditions as offers Villa Gaia in Tuscany, close to nature. Movement, dance, painting, writing and other activities we’ll propose can satisfy the longings of our body, refresh our emotional state, clean the contact with ourselves. We feel privileged to be part of this process and ready to share our presence, knowledge, passion.

Anjelika Dony – www.angeldance.ru
I have studied to be a choreographer, I´ve been taught various skills of training and means of teaching the body of another person. In my “archive” there are many stage pieces from folk dance to ballet miniatures. My work in the Theatre has been the tastiest. The actors, direction and dramaturgy broadened my mind and my image of the dance art form. I began to see how the art of charming the audience is created.
Since I´ve met contact improvisation and the first CI teachers, I practice the art of de-educating the body of another person and disentangling the illusions about movement and dance.
I think that the human being is already perfect the way it is created, and I believe in nature and it´s laws.
I´m prompted in life by the ability to fall in love unconditionally and undoubtedly with people, movement, mountains, journey, ideas. This ability has helped me to learn everything that forms me right now. This is what teaches the others.
CI is the only dance that helps me leave the limits of personality and transform my consciousness. In this sense I´m the student, not the teacher. The better I learn, the more chances have the others to learn something from me.
My special interest in contact improvisation is clarity. Clarity towards the practice. Honesty towards how do I move my weight in the space of Gravity. Attention towards clearing the dance from the personal. Letting things happen as they do.
I´m grateful for meeting such teachers as Steve Paxton, Nancy Stark Smith, Danny Lepkoff, Benno Voorham, Lisa Nelson, Esther Gal, Alexandr Girshon, Yaniv Mintzer, Yorg Hassman, Martin Keo and many others.

Contact, confidence, movement and reliance are the central focus around which the teaching and the practice are developed, both for adults and children. Above all the reliance on the present moment as a fruitful and complete source of inspiration and meaning. I’m appealed by the places and contexts where several art forms meet, communicate and create something new, transcending languages and differences.

I am also the co-founder and Art Director of Spazio Seme www.spazioseme.com, an international cultural Arts Center in Arezzo (Tuscany) . There, we create opportunities for research, organize and manage festivals, intensive workshops, performances, artistic productions and residencies. In particular I develop and lead classes for children (ContaKids, PlayContact) and I teach Contact Improvisation for adults and students at Art Schools and Universities. I am one of the organizers of the ItalyContactFest – www.italycontactfest.com – an international festival of Contact Improvisation.

I am grateful to have met artists and masters like Angelika Doniy, Nita Little, Leilani Weiss, Esther Gal, Claudia Schnürer, Itay Yatuv , Steve Batts, Martin Keo and many others.

17 e 18 settembre | Spazio Seme (Arezzo)

TECNICHE DI DANZA IMPROVVISAZIONE con Paolo Cingolani

Saturday 11-14h and 16-19h – (after dinner: night jam)

Sunday 10-14h

DANCE IMPROVISATION TECHNIQUES

with Paolo Cingolani

The workshop focuses on two basic topics of dance improvisation: to improve the perception of our body in motion and to use this perception inside an instant composition. Through the physical contact, the study of the force of gravity, the use of weight and support, observation and participation, will be facilitate those psychophysical states helpful to improve the perception and the movement within space and time. During the workshop will also be addressed issues concerning the theatre and composition, the phrasing and grammar of choreography, the poetics of the movement, the use of active imagination to create dances. Great attention will also be given to the practice of performance and analysis of the creative act in our day. The workshop is open to dancers, actors, musicians or anyone who wants to approach the instant composition and improvisation to discover a new way to practice dance.

Angelika Doniy

We will be experiencing moving and dancing from inner impulses, finding pathways inside the body and relating to others with an inner guideline.
It is a possibility to express feelings, images and information from the sunconscious that come through our bodies. Bodywork teaches us about inner alignment and touchqualities, it is also a wonderful way to let our nervous system integrate our experiences. We make room to process this in sharing. The dance is our teacher.
Through this two very complimentary practice we will explore:
eyes open, eyes closed
responsiveness to our partners and surroundings,
change of states
faculty of vision – part of the dance

“The space in between…” with Angela Doniy

I am interested in researching the dance in which theater, the game, frankness in emotions are encountered, a dance that will draw the attention of a random spectator and will be interesting not for the dance himself. This is the type of dance that combines seriousness and humor, paradox and reality.
We will start with bodywork – to prepare, relax and open up the resources of the body for the active interaction between the partners

“The intuition of the present moment” with Paolo Cingolani

Topic of the class will be about the “intuition” in improvisation. Through a clear understanding of the physical-mental processes underlying the moving, we will reach new levels of perception and experience of the present moment. The work includes exercises arising from contemporary dance, Contact-Improvisation and Taj-ji Qi-gong.
Starting from the anatomical level of the movement, we will lead to explore the poetic sphere of dance and instant composition. The class is open to all beginners and profesionals dancers.

DANIELE BELLUCCI

Contact Improvisation workshop with Yaniv Mintzer

sticks and strings and heavy things
a new perspective into our body and our dance

This workshop will explore material i’ve been researching in the past 2-3 years, by which i am super inspired and curious.
I am looking for ways to have a better understanding of what is happening inside our bodies and the way it functions and communicates within.
Using objects is esspecially efficient in understading these questions. objects are objective, direct and honest, and because they are outside of our bodies, they give us a peek into our system and how it functions. they become temporarily part of our system, and this awakes much excitement and fresh challenges for the system.
As much as time allows, we will explore with sticks, strings, tissues and stones, and touch on some familiar CI material such as- spirals, leaning and axis points, weight transfer and communication, touch and preception, as well as imagination and intuitive reading of partner and space.

We will also have time to dance and explore some fresh ideas about technique and the state of a relaxed and dynamic body in the dance. Material is suitable and relevant to all levels of practice.

Yaniv Mintzer

have been teaching more than a decade in israel, europe and the east, for non proffesional dancers as well as dance academies and dance companies.
These days teaching for the jerusalem academy of dance and the school for visual theatre, as well as private groups. touring europe regularly.
Working as practitioner of the ilan lev method, which explores the learning systems of the body, to bring healing to functional difficulties and improves motor skills. this work has been a major inspiration in my dance practice and teaching.

Mario Ghezzi
